The Battle

History & Significance

Edward II brought a major army to retake Berwick in 1319, three years after Bannockburn. The Scottish garrison — under Walter Stewart — resisted. Bruce responded not by sending relief directly but by dispatching Douglas and Moray on the raid that became the Battle of Myton. The resulting crisis forced Edward to abandon the siege. Berwick would not fall to England again until 1333.
