History & Significance

In 1312 Bruce attempted to seize Berwick by a night escalade, using ladders to scale the walls. The attempt failed when a dog barked and alerted the English garrison, which mounted the walls before the Scottish column could enter. The failed attempt illustrated Bruce's determination to recover the strategically vital border town and his willingness to use surprise operations rather than costly sieges — a precursor to the successful captures of Roxburgh and Edinburgh Castle in 1314.
