History & Significance

Penda brought the Middle Angles under direct Mercian royal control by making his son Peada their sub-king, following Peada conversion to Christianity as a condition of marrying Alhflaed daughter of Oswiu. This was the political and military absorption of the peoples between Mercia and East Anglia.
