Richborough is a Roman fort and harbour complex of exceptional archaeological importance, representing a major military and commercial installation from the first to third centuries AD. The site preserves the substantial remains of a stone fort with walls still standing to significant height, surrounded by multiple defensive ditches, which was constructed in the late first century AD and served as a crucial supply base for Roman military operations in Britain. As one of the principal ports on the Saxon Shore, Richborough facilitated both the defence of the southeastern coast and the control of maritime trade routes linking Britain to the continental empire. The monument contains stratified deposits spanning the entire Roman occupation, providing archaeological evidence of evolving fortification design and the site's transition from a military stronghold to a commercial centre, and its prominence is reflected in contemporary Roman sources including the Notitia Dignitatum.
