Overview

History & significance

Aberdulais Aqueduct is a cast iron structure carrying water across the Dulais valley near Neath in South Wales, constructed in the early nineteenth century as part of the industrial water supply infrastructure serving the Neath Canal. Built to convey water from upland sources to the canal and the ironworks dependent upon it, the aqueduct represents an important example of early industrial engineering in Wales during the period of rapid expansion in iron production. The structure reflects contemporary developments in cast iron construction techniques and demonstrates the significant engineering works required to sustain the region's burgeoning industrial economy. The aqueduct remains a substantial monument to the technical ambitions and infrastructure development of the post-medieval industrial period in South Wales.
