Achalipster is a deserted Iron Age settlement and souterrain located in Caithness, northern Scotland. The site comprises the remains of an underground stone-built passage—a souterrain—characteristic of Iron Age settlement in northern Britain, together with the surface structures of the associated settlement. Such underground structures served purposes ranging from storage and refuge to ritual use, and their construction demanded considerable labour and skill.
The souterrain was excavated from the underlying bedrock of Middle Old Red Sandstone, a conglomerate and sandstone formation dating to the Middle Devonian period, which would have provided readily workable stone for both the underground passage and the surface dwellings. The heavy clay soils overlying this bedrock are typical of Caithness and would have supported the pastoral economy of the Iron Age inhabitants.
Achalipster is protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM3666, recognising its importance to understanding Iron Age settlement patterns and construction techniques in the far north of Scotland. The site contributes significantly to archaeological knowledge of how northern communities adapted to their landscape and climate during this period.
