Overview

History & significance

Antonine Wall is a Roman frontier fortification constructed in the second century AD, forming part of the defensive system established under the Emperor Antoninus Pius around 142 AD. The wall extended approximately 37 miles across central Scotland from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde, serving as the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire during its period of active occupation. At this location near Inchyra in Stirlingshire, the wall comprises a stone-built barrier fronted by a substantial ditch, typical of its construction throughout its length. The monument represents one of the most significant archaeological remains of Roman Britain, though its active military use was largely abandoned within two decades of construction.
