Antonine Wall at Inchyra is a turf and stone fortification constructed by the Roman army in the second century AD. Built atop bedrock of the Clackmannan Group, a Westphalian sedimentary formation, the monument occupies a defensible position in Stirlingshire. The wall formed part of Rome's northernmost frontier in Britain, stretching across the Forth-Clyde isthmus for approximately 59 miles.
At this location, south of Inchyra Grange Hotel, the wall's construction exploited the underlying geology to provide stable foundations. The Clackmannan Group bedrock, comprised of sandstones and mudstones laid down in ancient deltaic environments, offered the hard ground necessary to support the rampart's substantial base. Turf blocks were laid upon stone foundations, creating a barrier approximately four metres high.
The monument is protected by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM12528, reflecting its significance as part of Scotland's most substantial Roman archaeological remains. The Antonine Wall represents a phase of Roman imperial expansion and represents the northernmost limit of sustained Roman military occupation in Britain, abandoned within a generation of its construction around AD 142.
