Overview

History & significance

Torphichen Preceptory is a medieval religious house founded in the twelfth century as a commandery of the Knights Hospitaller, serving as their principal Scottish establishment. The site preserves substantial remains of the preceptory church, most notably the central tower which survives as a distinctive architectural feature of the complex. The structure represents an important example of the military religious orders' presence in medieval Scotland and their role in both spiritual and temporal affairs. The preceptory continued in operation until the Scottish Reformation of the sixteenth century, when such Catholic institutions lost their function and lands.
