Overview

History & significance

The Antonine Wall is a Roman defensive fortification constructed in the second century AD, specifically around 142 CE during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius. This turf and stone barrier, approximately 37 miles in length, stretched across central Scotland between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde, representing the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire at its greatest extent. At this location near Bonnyside House in Stirlingshire, the wall survives as an earthwork consisting of a substantial rampart accompanied by a ditch system to its north, characteristic of the monument's typical construction. The site forms part of the continuous defensive line and demonstrates the Roman military infrastructure that controlled this region for approximately two decades before the frontier was abandoned and the army withdrew to Hadrian's Wall to the south.
