Antonine Wall, Great Western Road to Mount Pleasant, Old Kilpatrick is a section of the Antonine Wall, the turf-built frontier fortification constructed across central Scotland by the Roman Empire around 142 CE under the Emperor Antoninus Pius. This particular stretch, located in Dunbartonshire, represents one of the surviving portions of the wall's western terminus, extending from the Firth of Clyde towards the interior of Scotland. The monument consists of the earthwork remains of the defensive barrier, which originally comprised a substantial turf rampart constructed upon a stone foundation, fronted by a substantial ditch on its northern face. As the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire in Britain, the Antonine Wall remained in active use for approximately two decades before being abandoned around 160 CE, after which Hadrian's Wall to the south became the primary Roman frontier.
