The Antonine Wall is a Roman defensive frontier constructed across central Scotland between approximately 142 and 160 CE during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius, from whom it takes its name. This section north of Kinneil Primary School in Linlithgowshire represents part of the turf rampart and ditch system that extended for some 37 miles from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde, serving as the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire. The monument consists of the characteristic linear earthwork comprising a stone-founded turf wall fronted by a substantial V-shaped ditch, designed to control movement across the isthmus between the two firths. The Antonine Wall was abandoned within two decades and the frontier subsequently retracted to Hadrian's Wall to the south, making this site an important archaeological record of Roman military engineering and strategic policy in Britain.
