Overview

History & significance

The Antonine Wall is a Roman frontier fortification constructed in the second century AD, specifically between approximately 142 and 144 AD under the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius. This turf and stone rampart, which extends for roughly 37 miles across central Scotland from the Firth of Clyde to the Firth of Forth, represents the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire at its greatest extent. The monument comprises a substantial earthwork with an associated ditch system, and at the North Dalnottar location it remains visible as a linear archaeological feature within the Dunbartonshire landscape. The wall was abandoned by around 163 AD and represents a significant phase in Roman military strategy in Britain, superseding the earlier Hadrian's Wall as Rome's primary Scottish frontier.
