Overview

History & significance

Antonine Wall, Rough Castle to Lime Road, and field system is a scheduled monument in Stirlingshire that preserves a significant stretch of the Antonine Wall, the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire, constructed around AD 140–142 under the emperor Antoninus Pius. The monument encompasses the wall's defensive ditch and rampart within this defined area, along with associated field systems that reflect post-Roman land use patterns. The Antonine Wall represents the Roman military's attempt to extend control over Caledonia and remained in use for approximately twenty years before the frontier was withdrawn southward. The site's preservation, including the remains of Rough Castle fort and the landscape between it and Lime Road, demonstrates the substantial engineering works involved in Roman frontier construction and the subsequent settlement patterns of the surrounding landscape.
