Castle Crawford Farm enclosure is a post-medieval earthwork located in Lanarkshire, Scotland, situated approximately 585 metres north-north-west of Castle Crawford Farm itself. The monument comprises an enclosed agricultural or settlement area typical of the early modern period, when such bounded spaces were constructed to manage livestock, define property boundaries or organise domestic space within the working landscape.
The enclosure lies upon bedrock of the Portpatrick and Glenwhargen Formations, undifferentiated wacke deposits laid down during the Caradocian period of the Ordovician. This geological foundation of hard, sedimentary rock would have presented particular challenges and opportunities for the construction and use of the enclosure, influencing both the engineering of its banks or walls and the character of the surrounding terrain.
