Overview

History & significance

Castle Hills is a medieval motte and bailey castle located approximately 700 metres north east of Oran House in Yorkshire, England. The site comprises a substantial earthwork mound typical of Norman fortifications of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, accompanied by bailey defences characteristic of early medieval castle design. The monument was later adapted during the Second World War when airfield defences were constructed in proximity to the castle earthworks, reflecting the site's strategic location during the twentieth century. The survival of both medieval and twentieth century defensive features at Castle Hills provides evidence of the site's continued military importance across eight centuries of English history.
