Pallet Hill motte and bailey castle is a Norman fortification located near St Anne's Church in Yorkshire. The monument comprises an earthwork defensive structure typical of the late eleventh or twelfth century, when such castles were extensively constructed across northern England following the Norman Conquest. The site consists of an artificial mound, or motte, which would have supported a timber or stone fortification, accompanied by an adjoining baileys or defended courtyard areas. Although the castle has not survived as a substantial standing structure, the earthwork remains represent an important example of early medieval military architecture and settlement hierarchy in the Yorkshire landscape.
