Overview

History & significance

Castlesteads Roman fort is a second-century military installation situated on Hadrian's Wall in Cumberland, positioned to the south of the wall line itself. The fort was constructed during the reign of Hadrian and served as an auxiliary fortification controlling the strategic valley approach along the line of the Wall. The vallum, the characteristic flat-bottomed ditch with flanking mounds that formed part of Hadrian's Wall system, survives as an archaeological feature running between the track to the east of the fort and the Cam Beck to the west, preserving evidence of the fort's defensive infrastructure and territorial demarcation. The site represents an important example of the integrated defensive arrangements that characterized the Hadrianic frontier programme in northern Britain during the Roman occupation.
