Chertsey Abbey is a Benedictine monastery founded in 666 AD on the banks of the River Thames in Surrey, England. The abbey became one of the wealthiest and most influential monastic houses in medieval England, holding extensive lands and maintaining significant ecclesiastical authority throughout the Anglo-Saxon and Norman periods. The surviving earthworks and fragmentary masonry remains, including portions of the precinct wall and building foundations, represent one of England's major dissolved monasteries, suppressed during the Reformation in 1537. The site was excavated and studied during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, yielding artefactual and structural evidence of its complex layout and long occupation from the seventh century until its dissolution.
