Overview

History & significance

Clais Garbh is a shieling group situated approximately 1660 metres west of Groddie Cottage in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The site comprises the remains of temporary pastoral settlements used during the summer months for cattle herding, a practice characteristic of the Highlands and uplands of Scotland from at least the medieval period through to the eighteenth century. The physical structures at Clais Garbh would have consisted of simple stone or turf-built shelters and associated enclosures, though the exact state of preservation and specific layout of the structures requires site inspection to determine. Shielings such as this represent important archaeological evidence for the seasonal transhumance economy and pastoral land use that characterised the Scottish uplands prior to the agricultural improvements and clearances of the later eighteenth century.
