Groddie Cottage is a shieling settlement located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, positioned approximately 2520 metres, 2630 metres and 2700 metres west-north-west of its reference point. Shielings were temporary pastoral structures used seasonally by herders during the transhumance practice of moving livestock to upland grazing grounds, a practice particularly prevalent in the Scottish Highlands and uplands during the medieval and early modern periods. The site comprises multiple structures typical of such settlements, where cattle herds would have been tended during summer months when lowland pastures were reserved for other uses. The remains visible at Groddie represent evidence of this important pastoral economy that sustained rural communities in Aberdeenshire for centuries.
