The site sits upon bedrock formed during the Silurian period, comprising an unnamed mafic igneous intrusion that dates to the Ordovician to Silurian era. This geological foundation of dark igneous rock underlies the upland landscape where the shielings were constructed.
Shielings were seasonal settlements used by Highland and Lowland communities for pastoral herding, particularly during summer months when livestock were moved to higher grazing grounds.
