Balgrennie is a post-medieval hut circle and field system located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, approximately 3.2 kilometres west-north-west of the main settlement. The monument lies on bedrock formed during the Silurian period, comprising a mafic igneous intrusion that creates a challenging environment for agriculture. Despite these geological constraints, the site shows evidence of sustained human settlement and land management during the post-medieval centuries.
The hut circle represents a form of rural dwelling typical of upland and marginal farming communities in north-east Scotland from the sixteenth century onwards. Associated field systems indicate attempts to exploit the surrounding landscape through cultivation and stock management. The mafic igneous bedrock would have influenced both settlement placement and the pattern of field boundaries, as the underlying geology determined soil quality and drainage across the site.
