The monument comprises a fortified residential structure typical of the Scottish Iron Age, when such enclosed homesteads served as secure settlements for elite families and their dependants. Duns of this period were strategically positioned to command surrounding territory and provide defensive advantage against rival groups.
The dun sits upon ancient Ordovician bedrock composed of mafic lava and tuff, part of the Cambrian and Ordovician rock sequence that underlies this part of Ayrshire.
