Craigiehall hut-circle, located 630 metres east-south-east of Craigiehall in Lanarkshire, is a prehistoric domestic dwelling of the type common across upland Scotland. The structure survives as a circular or sub-circular depression, characteristic of Iron Age settlement patterns in the region. Such hut-circles typically measured between 6 and 10 metres in diameter and served as the foundations for roundhouses with timber superstructures and thatch or turf roofing.
The monument sits upon bedrock composed of unnamed extrusive rocks of Dinantian age, formed during the Mississippian period as mafic lava and tuff. This volcanic geology, prevalent across much of central Scotland, provided both building material and shaped the landscape exploited by prehistoric communities. The exposed rocky terrain of such upland areas would have supported pastoral economies alongside cultivation of hardy crops.
