Crail Airfield pillbox 400m S of Kirklands is a reinforced concrete defensive structure built in Fife during the Second World War. Positioned 400 metres south of Kirklands on the airfield, the pillbox was part of Scotland's inland defence network constructed between 1940 and 1941 to counter the threat of German invasion. These standardised fortifications were typically manned by Home Guard units and regular troops, providing machine-gun or anti-tank fire across open ground and tactical approaches.
The pillbox sits upon geology formed from the sedimentary rock cycles of the Strathclyde Group, laid down during the Visean period of the Carboniferous.
