Overview

History & significance

Culross Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1217 by Malcolm, Earl of Fife, situated on the Firth of Forth in Fife, Scotland. The abbey was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and became one of the principal religious houses in medieval Scotland, holding significant lands and exerting considerable influence over the surrounding region until its dissolution during the Scottish Reformation in the sixteenth century. The surviving remains include parts of the abbey church, notably the choir and transepts, along with fragments of the claustral buildings, which demonstrate the characteristic architectural style of Cistercian establishments. The site underwent reconstruction and partial restoration in the nineteenth century, and today the ruins form part of a complex heritage landscape that includes the adjacent historic settlement of Culross and its eighteenth-century townscape.
