Drumtroddan is a Bronze Age rock art site located in Wigtownshire, south-west Scotland, comprising two naturally occurring rock outcrops decorated with cup marks and cup-and-ring markings. The carvings, which consist of numerous cupules with some examples surrounded by concentric rings, are characteristic of prehistoric rock art tradition prevalent across Britain during the Bronze Age, though the practice may have originated in the Neolithic period. The site remains undated by absolute methods, but comparative analysis with similar motifs across Scotland suggests creation during the later Neolithic or Bronze Age. The rock art at Drumtroddan represents an important example of this widespread but still poorly understood tradition of ritual or symbolic carving on natural stone surfaces.
