East Fortune airfield is a World War II aerodrome located in East Lothian, Scotland, built on bedrock of the Inverclyde Group. The underlying sandstone, siltstone and mudstone formation, dating to the Osagean period, provided a stable foundation for the runway and dispersal areas constructed during wartime expansion of RAF operations. The relatively flat terrain and solid geology of this part of East Lothian made it suitable for intensive military aviation use.
The airfield was developed as part of Britain's air defence infrastructure during the Second World War. Its position in southeast Scotland placed it within range of targets across the North Sea and provided strategic cover for shipping lanes and industrial centres. The site's geology—predominantly sandstone with interbedded siltstones and mudstones—offered adequate drainage characteristics necessary for sustained operations by heavy aircraft and ground support facilities.
