Overview

History & significance

Eastriggs former munitions factory is a complex of First World War industrial sites located in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, comprising spatially distributed production facilities for explosives manufacture. The works included a glycerine distillery and acids production area situated approximately 600 metres south-south-west of Rosslea, a gun-cotton section 700 metres south-east of the same reference point, and a nitro-glycerine production area positioned 2050 metres east-south-east of Rosslea. The factory was developed to meet wartime demand for explosives, particularly for ordnance and munitions, and represents a significant example of Britain's munitions production infrastructure during the First World War. The dispersed layout of the different production sections reflects contemporary safety practices, whereby highly explosive materials were manufactured in separate, isolated locations to minimise the risk of catastrophic accidents affecting the entire works.

Eastriggs former munitions factory, glycerine distillery and acids production area, gun-cotton section and nitro-glycerine hill, 600m SSW, 700m SE and 2050m ESE of Rosslea is a scheduled monument protected by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM13761. View the official record →
