Edgar Tower is a substantial Norman gatehouse standing at the entrance to Worcester Cathedral Close, erected in the twelfth century as a fortified entry point to the ecclesiastical precinct. Built of sandstone with rounded turrets and a vaulted archway, the tower exemplifies the military architecture of the Norman period and served both defensive and administrative functions for the cathedral foundation. The structure retains significant medieval fabric despite later modifications, and its prominent position at the Close entrance reflects the importance of controlling access to the cathedral community and its lands. Edgar Tower remains one of Worcester's most recognizable medieval monuments and represents the physical authority exercised by the cathedral chapter over its precincts during the high medieval period.
