Edgarton Mote is an Iron Age fort situated 690 metres south-west of Camelon Bridge in Kirkcudbrightshire, south-west Scotland. The monument occupies ground underlain by the Hawick Group wackes, a resistant sandstone bedrock dating to the Wenlock period, which would have provided stable foundations for the substantial earthworks characteristic of Iron Age fortified settlements.
The fort belongs to the widespread tradition of defended homesteads and communal refuges that developed across Scotland during the Iron Age, typically featuring ramparts and ditches constructed from locally available stone and soil. The Hawick Group geology underlying this site would have offered suitable material for the construction and maintenance of such defensive structures, whilst the undulating landscape of the locality provided natural advantages for a fortified settlement.
