Edinburgh Castle is a royal fortress occupying the volcanic crag known as Castle Rock in Edinburgh, Midlothian, which has been fortified since at least the Early Medieval period. The castle's origins as a defended settlement date to the Iron Age, though the structures visible today derive largely from the medieval period onwards, with the earliest surviving stone architecture including St Margaret's Chapel, built in the early twelfth century. The fortress served as a royal residence, military stronghold, and symbol of Scottish authority, playing a crucial role in the nation's history through numerous sieges and periods of occupation, particularly during the Wars of Scottish Independence. The castle complex comprises numerous defensive structures including curtain walls, towers, and gatehouses accumulated over centuries, together with domestic buildings reflecting its continued use as a royal seat and later as a military installation.
