Overview

History & significance

Edinburgh Town Wall, Flodden Wall, Drummond Street to Pleasance is a section of defensive fortification constructed in the early sixteenth century following Scotland's defeat at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. Built between 1513 and the 1530s, this wall was erected to protect Edinburgh's south side and represented a substantial civic investment in urban defence during a period of heightened military vulnerability. The surviving stretch between Drummond Street and Pleasance comprises stone-built masonry characteristic of early modern Scottish military architecture, forming part of the more extensive defensive circuit that once enclosed the city's southern approaches. This section remains an important archaeological monument demonstrating Edinburgh's medieval and early modern urban development and the practical defensive measures undertaken by the civic authorities in the decades following the Flodden campaign.
