Overview

History & significance

Edinburgh Town Wall, Flodden Wall, Johnston Terrace to Grassmarket is a section of defensive fortification constructed in Edinburgh following the Scottish defeat at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. Built during the early sixteenth century, the wall formed part of the extensive town defences erected to protect the city during a period of heightened military vulnerability. The surviving stretch between Johnston Terrace and the Grassmarket comprises substantial stone construction and represents one of the more intact portions of the original Flodden Wall circuit. This defensive work demonstrates the scale of Edinburgh's urban fortification programme and remains an important archaeological and architectural record of Renaissance-period military engineering in Scotland.
