Overview

History & significance

Edzell Castle is a sixteenth-century fortified residence located in Angus, Scotland, constructed by the Lindsay family who held significant influence in the region. The castle comprises a substantial L-plan tower house with later extensions, built around 1550, and is distinguished by its remarkable walled garden or "pleasaunce" added in the early seventeenth century under David Lindsay, 11th Earl of Crawford. The garden walls, decorated with distinctive carved stone panels depicting the liberal arts, religious emblems, and heraldic devices, represent one of Scotland's finest examples of Renaissance garden design. The castle underwent modification and decline following the Jacobite period, but the architectural remains, including the tower house and ornamental garden enclosure, survive as important evidence of sixteenth and seventeenth-century aristocratic life and aesthetic taste in Scotland.
