Overview

History & significance

Elgin Cathedral is a ruined medieval cathedral located in Morayshire, Scotland, which was constructed beginning in the thirteenth century and served as the principal ecclesiastical building of the region for several centuries. The cathedral was largely destroyed during the Scottish Reformation in the sixteenth century, though substantial portions of its stonework remain standing, including parts of the nave walls and the distinctive twin towers of the west front. The surviving architectural elements reflect the Gothic style characteristic of late medieval Scottish ecclesiastical building, with pointed arches and decorative stonework evident in the fragmentary remains. The site represents an important monument to the religious and cultural life of medieval Scotland and remains a significant archaeological landscape within Morayshire.
