Ellesmere Castle is a motte and bailey fortification located approximately 200 metres south west of St Mary's Church in Ellesmere, Shropshire. The castle comprises a substantial earthwork mound with an adjoining bailey, characteristic of Norman defensive architecture dating to the eleventh or twelfth century. The site represents typical early medieval fortification practice in the Welsh Marches, where such structures served strategic military and administrative functions during the period of Norman expansion into the borderlands. The earthwork remains largely well preserved, though the original wooden or stone superstructure has not survived.
