History & significance

The enclosure and field system on the north side of Cheverton Down, immediately east of Rowborough Bottom, is an archaeological monument of Iron Age date located in Hampshire. The site comprises a series of linear and rectilinear field divisions characteristic of later prehistoric land organisation, with earthwork traces surviving as banks and ditches that define individual field parcels. The enclosure represents evidence of systematic agricultural settlement and landscape management during the Iron Age period, demonstrating contemporary patterns of field allocation and territorial organisation.
