Overview

History & significance

Ewenni Priory is a Benedictine priory founded in the late eleventh century in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, established by Maurice de Londres as a daughter house of the Benedictine monastery at Normandy. The priory comprises a substantial stone church with a fortified precinct wall, reflecting the defensive concerns of medieval religious communities in Wales during the Norman period and subsequent centuries. The surviving structures include the church, parts of the claustral ranges, and the impressive perimeter wall with its gatehouse, which date largely from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, with later medieval modifications. The site functioned as a significant centre for Benedictine monastic life until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the sixteenth century, and its church continues in use as a parish church, making it one of the better-preserved monastic sites in South Wales.
