The Group of eight shielings and a track on Crossthwaite Scars is an upland pastoral monument consisting of eight stone-built structures and associated routeway located on the fells of the northern Pennines. The shielings date to the medieval and early modern periods and represent the remains of seasonal shelters used during summer pasturing of livestock on the high moorland. The structures are typical of the pastoral economy practised across the Pennine uplands, where cattle and sheep were driven to higher ground during the summer months. The associated track indicates the movement routes used by herders and animals in the management of these transhumant pastoral activities, which formed an integral part of the upland economy of medieval and post-medieval northern England.
