Grumbeg is a depopulated township situated on the north shore of Loch Naver in Sutherland, Scotland. The settlement represents an example of the rural communities that existed in the Scottish Highlands before the widespread depopulation caused by the Clearances in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The site survives as archaeological remains indicating domestic occupation, reflecting the pattern of highland settlement that characterised the region prior to agricultural reorganisation and estate management changes. Like comparable depopulated townships in Sutherland, Grumbeg provides evidence of the historical landscape and settlement patterns that were transformed during the period of Highland social and economic upheaval.
