Hadrian's Wall is a Roman frontier fortification constructed in the second century AD under the emperor Hadrian to demarcate and defend the northern boundary of Roman Britain. Between Sunnybrae at Halton Shields and Haltonchesters Roman fort, the Wall and its accompanying vallum (a defensive ditch and bank system) span wall miles 20 and 21 in Northumberland, representing a well-preserved section of the monument's overall course across northern England. The vallum, constructed on the southern side of the Wall, served as an additional boundary marker and defensive feature controlling movement between the fort and the surrounding landscape. This section preserves important archaeological evidence of the Wall's construction techniques and the relationship between the linear fortification and the fort installations that garrisoned it.
