Overview

History & significance

Hadrian's Wall vallum is a linear earthwork forming part of the defensive system constructed during the Roman occupation of Britain in the second century AD. Between wall miles 78 and 79 near Kirkland House and Bowness-on-Solway in Cumberland, the vallum survives as a substantial ditch with parallel banks, a characteristic feature of the wall's south-facing perimeter. The earthwork dates to the reign of Emperor Hadrian, approximately AD 122 onwards, and represents the deliberate closure of the frontier zone immediately south of the stone and turf wall itself. This section of the vallum demonstrates the Roman military engineering approach to territorial demarcation and control along the northwestern frontier of Roman Britain, extending from the North Sea to the Solway Firth.
