Overview

History & significance

Hadrian's Wall vallum is a Roman defensive earthwork constructed in the second century AD as part of the fortified frontier system built under the Emperor Hadrian. Between wall miles 78 and 79 near Bowness-on-Solway in Cumberland, the vallum survives as a substantial linear earthwork comprising a ditch flanked by two parallel banks, characteristic of this element of the wall's design. The vallum ran parallel to the main wall for much of its length and served to define the military zone and restrict access from the south. This section represents significant surviving evidence of Roman engineering and frontier control in the far northwestern reaches of the British province.
