Hatfield Broad Oak Priory is a Benedictine monastery founded in the eleventh century in Essex, established as a daughter house of the abbey of Saint-Denis in France. The priory remained an important religious community throughout the medieval period until its dissolution during the Reformation in the sixteenth century. Substantial remains of the priory church and claustral buildings survive on the site, including significant fragments of the romanesque architecture characteristic of Norman monastic foundations. The ruins testify to the scale and architectural sophistication of this once-thriving monastic establishment in medieval Essex.
