Hatfield Broad Oak Priory is a Benedictine monastic foundation established in Essex during the eleventh century, originating as a cell dependent on the abbey of Saint-Denis in France before becoming independent. The priory occupied a significant position within the medieval ecclesiastical landscape of Essex and survived until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the sixteenth century. The surviving remains include parts of the priory church and associated monastic structures, which are testament to the scale and importance of the establishment during the medieval period. The site remains an important archaeological monument illustrating the character of medieval monastic life and the architectural traditions of the period in Essex.
