Hatton Mill enclosure is a post-medieval earthwork located approximately 300 metres west-north-west of Hatton Mill in Angus, Scotland. The site sits upon bedrock of the Arbuthnott-Garvock Group, Pragian in age, which comprises sandstone with subordinate conglomerate, siltstone and mudstone. This local geology would have provided building stone for the enclosure's construction and shaped the landscape in which it developed.
Post-medieval enclosures such as this represent the agricultural reorganisation of the Scottish countryside from the 16th century onwards, when landholders sought to consolidate and regulate their holdings through formal field boundaries. Hatton Mill's enclosure reflects this period of landscape change, when traditional run-rig systems of open cultivation began to give way to more defined and enclosed farming units.
