Overview

History & significance

Hedon medieval town is a scheduled monument and former significant port settlement in the East Riding of Yorkshire, located near the Humber Estuary. The town developed from the twelfth century onwards as a prosperous trading centre, achieving importance as a major medieval port and receiving royal charter status, which facilitated its commercial growth during the later medieval period. The surviving physical remains include the substantial medieval church of Holy Trinity, with its distinctive octagonal tower, along with the street plan and archaeological deposits that reflect the town's former urban layout and mercantile character. Hedon's significance declined from the sixteenth century as silting of the Humber estuary and competition from Hull gradually reduced its commercial viability, leaving the town as a valuable archaeological record of medieval urban development and port activity.
