Overview

History & significance

Hill's Tramroad Inclines, Llanfoist is a Post Medieval and Modern transport structure consisting of inclined railway sections that formed part of the broader tramroad system serving the iron and coal industries of the South Wales valleys. Located near Llanfoist in Monmouthshire, the inclines date from the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when tramroads were constructed to transport minerals and finished goods from inland mines and furnaces to canal basins and river navigation points. The site preserves evidence of the engineering solutions developed to overcome steep topography, with inclined planes allowing loaded trucks to descend by gravity whilst empty ones were hauled back up. These structures represent a significant phase in industrial transport history before the advent of steam locomotives on flanged rails became widespread across Britain.
