Hylton Castle is a medieval fortified house situated near Sunderland in Tyne and Wear, dating from the late fourteenth century. The principal structure is a substantial stone gatehouse, built by the Hylton family as a symbol of their power and status, which survives as one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in the region. The site subsequently developed during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with the addition of country houses and associated formal gardens, reflecting the changing domestic aspirations of its successive owners. The monument remains a significant archaeological and architectural record of continuous occupation and architectural ambition across more than four centuries of English history.
