Lagan navigation is a modern canal in Belfast, Northern Ireland, constructed in the late eighteenth century to facilitate commercial transport along the River Lagan. The navigation works, completed by 1763, comprised a series of locks and weirs designed to make the river navigable for barges carrying cargo between Belfast and Lisburn, thereby improving access to inland markets and industrial sites. The scheme represents an important example of Georgian-era infrastructure development in Ulster and reflects the growth of Belfast as a commercial centre during this period. The canal structures, though substantially modified and renewed over subsequent centuries, remain evidence of the ambitious engineering projects that supported the city's eighteenth-century expansion.
