Overview

History & significance

Lisburn Castle is a post-medieval fortification in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, originally constructed as a defensive structure and subsequently developed as an artillery fort. The castle was established during the seventeenth century and represents the period of military consolidation following the Ulster plantation and the Irish Confederate Wars. The site incorporated substantial earthwork defences and masonry structures typical of early modern military architecture, with evidence of later artillery modifications reflecting changes in fortification design. Remnants of the castle gates and associated outworks survive at the location now known as Castle Gardens, Lisnagarvey, preserving important archaeological evidence of early modern military engineering in Ulster.
